Created by Xingyun Shen (she/her), No Ordinary Protest is a research portfolio doubled as an open-source platform for sustainability & fashion.

In its previous life, No Ordinary Protest (NOP) was a black hardback notebook Xingyun used in 2018 to scribble thoughts on the fashion industry, notes on various socio-environmental issues, and ideas for how the industry can be better. In 2019, she transported her note-taking to an Instagram account under the handle @noordinaryprotest, and began publicly sharing and advocating for change.

After many iterations of NOP and the researcher herself, we arrive at noordinaryprotest.fashion. This space houses work centered on promoting greater sustainable fashion literacy and introducing new ways of relating to the clothes we wear (and do not).

Currently, Xingyun studies at the MA Critical Fashion Practices programme at ArtEZ University of the Arts, where her new research direction focuses on the intimate nature of fashion through text as material. She organises “The Marginalia Book Club”, a soon-to-be monthly discussion on how we read what we read.

You may know her as the country coordinator of Fashion Revolution Singapore and the research and impact coordinator at The Fashion Pulpit from 2021-2023.
